The car was making a squeaky, screechy sound when the breaks were applied, so we brought the car to the dealership’s service department. They found a plastic bag stuck in the axle and charged nearly $30 to remove it. I guess the economy is indeed really bad.

This is the my final response to a thread entitled “a very nice BOR clone” at Harmony Central Effects Forum just before it was mysteriously deleted. In this post, i laid out my reason for all that i view is wrong with some so-called pedal makers.

This is a complete rant. I am leaving it here because it’ll just get deleted if posted elsewhere and i believe that you need to know. Some of these guys are just gutless scums and this is where i will draw the line. They have gone too far and made this personal.
Go to Page 5. My first post in this thread was directed at someone other than you who was making a false claim about me. You arrived as a concern troll, and subsequently claimed I started a discussion with you. I’ve seen you acting irrationally before, but not this badly. I’m sorry I can’t help you, Binh.
Let me state that i don’t need your help, whatever dubious help you are offering me. Thank you.

Second, i was referring to your incessant indication here and elsewhere that you know where people live and who they are. That’s just plain rude, and you need to stop. By stating you know where someone lives can construed as a threat. It’s none of your business and persistence in knowing these sort of personal information is unethical, unprofessional and possibly illegal.

For everyone who is reading this thread and wonder what all the fuss is about and why i am pissed off at zvex and company, here is my explanation.

First let me tell you that i have been at HCFX since 2001 and have accumulated probably over 15000 posts over that time, and i have seen a lot of the “boutique effects business” developed on the web. Thus I’m not a noob whose opinions were just formed yesterday. I used to go under the moniker “cow4prez” which you can search for.

It is quite simple but the explanation will need to be long.

I have always argued that there is nothing wrong with cloning circuits. Most circuits themselves are not patented and hence not illegal to reverse. This is what the “forbidden forum” does for all sorts circuits past, present and future. Second, a large segment of the industry is based on copying circuits. Third, look at the pedals you own. In all likelihood, you own a clone or a pedal modified from an existing circuit. I believe there is very little difference between copying a circuit and modifying it. To modify, you need to first copy. Zvex claims i spread lies. Interesting, as i think also zvex spreads lies and hypocrisy. How can you criticize cloning when you yourself have cloned. Zvex have openly admitted that he has broken open pedals to see how they work and that he owns a multitude of schematics that others have drawn up. I can attest to this fact, because i have read this from zvex himself here and elsewhere over 8 years.

I don’t hate zvex. He just annoys the shit out of me because he doesn’t have anything of substance to say with respect to the subject matter except to openly flame people who openly disagree him. Not only that, he will open personally insult you. This has never really bothered me as I have always found this tactic lowly and a desperate effort to summon support from naive parties. Now the some people have decided to turn this personal and have up the ante.

Here is a what zvex wrote to me one time
I think you’re a 13-year-old ugly fat girl whose daddy died dropping out a hotel window in Prague while trying to get a cell signal.

And, you’ve got the cost of caps way down. Materials costs are jumping. Nothing you say makes any sense. You’re OBSESSED. And you do NOTHING.
i thought it was funny

Zvex and I got into it a while back at the gear page. I’ll leave to you to read it at your own leisure (now subsequently locked) . Yours truly insulted me and demanded my name and where i live. Hm, curious. He seemed to think i hide behind my username. In fact, this seems to be something of a trend with zvex as of late. I assure you this premise that i hide behind my username is incorrect and absurd.

Here’s a piece of tidbit for you all.

I came across this thread at the haunting mids, which was started in response to the gear page thread above. Realize i don’t even read the haunting mids forum, except for this one time when i was there to post regarding the Aramat Effects auction cancer fund in which i was asked to due a swirl paint job for a green machine. While there i serendipitously ran into the above thread. Apparently, i am also a jackass for my unpopular opinions and zvex is a duck. Jeff seemingly has my back (thanks Jeff).

Realize that up until now it has been about fundamental disagreements over cloning. Hey that’s okay, it’s a disagreement :idk: until i read this from a pedal maker….

To me, it just reads like he has no social skills a lot of the time. The “tell us your name” thing sounds almost like a lawyer tactic– he has no argument, so he just uses something with no bearing on the discussion as if it’s the most important factor. Weird dude.
Fact is most of us builders have Super Velcroboy’s home, work address etc. He hides behind the internet anonymously. Seems like Vex is trying to point this out.
I don’t know, I think anonymity is everyone’s right. He felt he was superior to us all in some way because his moniker includes his real name. I don’t get it.

HA! Well man. Take it as flattery that he cared enough get in touch. When Lovepedal Sean and I started out we tagged ours zvex too. Devi did it too. Vex never said anything to me. I did apologize years later. No doubt he was off his handle, but he is probably sick of it.
i pretty much know who this telemaster pedalmaker guy is, but that’s not the point.

Fact is i have never bought a single pedal from these guys.

Questions for the interested reader

1. How does telemaster know my home address and work address?

2. how many builders really know my personal and confidential addresses when i NEVER gave it away?

3. would one of these builders be zvex?

4. do builders share personal information about me and possibly their customers with each other?

5. why would zvex demand my name and personal information on a public forum?

6. why would the “vast majority of builders” care for my work address?

7. should i feel afraid for my personal information is known to these builders?

i don’t know that they do know and i don’t know if zvex is involved, but these are the questions i ask myself after reading this. Fact is, these words came out directly from a pedalmaker. No body forced a gun to his head.

Now let me ask you this.

Why can’t people such as telemaster and zvex respect my privacy?

My pedal theory is that one pedalmaker from whom i bought a pedal gave my personal information and shared it, assuming what telemaster said is true.

Needless to say, that is just fucking wrong.

There isn’t much of an alternative interpretation.

A. You shared personal information when you had no right to it or

B. You don’t give a shit that you shared personal information with another builder

Realize that when you buy a pedal from them, your addresses and personal info are recorded.

If they don’t respect my personal information, then you got to ask yourself — will respect yours?

This isn’t something i made up. It’s there for you to read and interpret for yourself. And i have a a copy of the threads if they get deleted. And they are on the google cache. It’s there.

All this over opinions.

That’s sad folks. The people you buy pedals are the real sad ones imo.

thanks for reading,

The Tonecore concept is similar to the idea that i had except the modular unit of the Tonecore is still based on a pedal, i.e. you still need a pedalboard, jacks, patch cables, separate power supplies. It would nice to just have a pre-fabricated pedalboard that would except interchangeable PCB circuits for anything you want.

Great video of Kobe Bryant versus the great zone defense. Taking nothing away from Boston. They played great affressive defense against the best player in the world.

Game 6 exemplifies the youth and naiveté of this Laker team. Better luck next year.

The stompbox pedal is essentially the basic modular unit for the pedalboard. Look at the typical Boss pedal. They all come in standard sizes. This is beneficial because you can just add or take away an effect without skipping a beat, especially if you were to use a BCB60 board. Problem is not everyone likes to have an all Boss pedalboard.

The typical effects enthusiast switch effects and change his board at least once a month. The basic modular idea is still there though. The pedalboard suffers some notable drawbacks.

 • need a power supply
 • need patch cables
 • pedals don’t fit right within its confine
 • can be complex and large

DIY pedal kits don’t improve on these disadvantages. So what can be done? Some interesting ideas have been entertained. Dave Fox’s ZIM cards allow the ZIM to be tonally flexible. Swap them in and out. Look at these preamps made by Randall. Total modular concept.

So I’ve been thinking. Let’s extend this concept for the pedalboard. Say you have a gig, and you need an od, distortion and delay. Assume the next day you want to play with a boost, fuzz and delay. The most simplistic thing to do is swap out the PCB circuits. Jacks, switches, power and pots to some extent haven’t really change.

How do we do this? Standardize everything. Standardize the enclosure to accommodate 3 circuits, with standard in/out jack, switches, power rails, led, and pots with defined areas for individual circuits to be plugged in via solderless adapters. Make it easy to swap these PCB circuits.

So what we end up with is a very customized scale-down all-in-one box system that is ultra portable. No patch cables needed. No ridiculous power supply system. No wires everywhere. No weight issue. Just take it with you and plug and play.

From a DIY standpoint, I find this solution elegant. You wouldn’t have to worry to much about drilling a bunch of Hammonds and try to fit everything in. Just build a generic enclosure and build the modular circuits to fit your needs. This would be cost effective as well.

More to come…

I’m never really all that anal about getting to duplicate his sound, but here is a pretty good detail analysis on how he does it.

Check out these terrific court side photos of the game 5.

Sad but true

“Two tickets to a Lakers-Spurs game: $372.

Parking: $20.

Gas: $13.50.

A large draft beer: $8.75.

Hot dog: $4.75.

Seeing the Lakers play in the Western Conference finals at Staples Center: Pricey.”

This is something I’ve been meaning to do for awhile, and finally had some time to actually do it.

One of the best feature of the RC-2 is it’s small size. I mean it has a real small footprint! Unfortunately, because of this, there had to be some compromises and thus some of the other key features (tap tempo, stop, erase, change save loops) are harder to accessed without using a FS-5U or a FS-6. If you buy one of these switches, then essentially you have negated the small size benefit.

This mod cost about $4 to do. Here is my Boss RC-2

Go ahead and take the top and bottom plate off.

I used a mini SPST switch that i got from Radioshack. You need to have 2 of these.

The extra functions are controlled by grounding either the tip or the ring of the stereo jack shown here. This jack is grounded to the chassis of the pedal.

There is an unused ground lug that you can use. Take a wire and solder to that. Solder a second wire to the ring and a third to the tip. Then solder these to the 2 SPST’s.

There is room for 2 switches. The battery clip is not needed so i just cut it off. I then drilled into the top plate to mount the switches. The right switch will run into the chassis, so i drilled a large hole underneath to allow for movement.

It works quite well.

You can see a demonstration video here.
